Some rock records are simply more suitable for a particular season. For instance, the publication Collider recently compiled a list of the “5 Essential Rock Albums for Autumn.”
The ranking, published on October 6, featured the autumnal albums Harvest by Neil Young (1972), Pablo Honey by Radiohead (1993), No Need to Argue by The Cranberries (1994), and Rumours by Fleetwood Mac (1977). The publication put The Beatles‘ sixth album, Rubber Soul, released in 1965, at the list’s top spot.
According to Collider, Rubber Soul deserved the title of the most “Essential Rock Album for Autumn,” as it’s a versatile rock record that exudes warmth and showed the Beatles were ready for a big change.
A reissue of Rubber Soul came out on October 2, 2026. Giles Martin, the son of The Beatles’ late producer, George Martin, and Grammy Award-winning recording engineer Sam Okell were responsible for mixing the new special edition.
In an October 2026 interview with Gold Radio, Martin explained that the surviving Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, had requested him to mix a new version of Rubber Soul. He noted that he had worked on the Beatles-themed Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show, The Beatles LOVE, before he re-mixed the records Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, The White Album, Revolver, and Abbey Road.
“I’ll mix and create this thing and play it to [McCartney and Starr]. And then they give me their comments and then it comes out,” said Martin.
Martin went on to say that “Rubber Soul is an interesting record” as it was the Beatles’ attempt to prove themselves as a real rock band. He explained that The Beatles, which also consisted of the late George Harrison and the late John Lennon, spent time with America, The Byrds, and Crosby, Stills, and Nash while touring in America. According to Martin, the Beatles “realized they didn’t want to be a pop band” anymore after being around said rock bands.
He then said that while listening to the original Rubber Soul recordings, he understood The Beatles’ desire to change their sound.
“I understand what they’re trying to do,” said Martin.
