No. 11 Alabama men’s golf rallied past No. 1 Auburn in the final round and claimed its first championship of 2026-27, winning the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday.
The Crimson Tide sat second and two strokes behind the Tigers to end 36 holes. An 11-under-par final round from Auburn allowed Alabama to pounce and seize the win, as three Crimson Tide golfers ended the tournament with top-10 finishes.
Alabama also defeated 13 top-25 teams, including seven of the nation’s top 10 teams.
“I think the first two tournaments did a lot of good things for us as the guys competed alongside great competition, so I think everybody is getting their feet on the ground, while also bringing back things to work on,” head coach Jay Seawell said in a news release. “We went back to hard work and to try to play winning golf, as we were just doing a little bit of this and that, which it kept us from winning. I’m proud of the boys because they went to work and did an incredible job of working over the last few days, cleaning up the little things we have learned on the road.”
Juniors Nick Gross and William Jennings finished tied for third place at 2-under-par, while freshman Bailey Sutter continued his strong start to his Alabama career with a ninth-place finish at 1-over-par. The result was Gross’ best individual finish of his career, alongside his career-best 54-hole tournament score at 208.
He also paced the field in par 5 scoring at 6-under-par.
“It was cool when Nick came off the 18th green today,” Seawell said. “He didn’t play this time last year, so it was just cool to kind of hug his neck after an incredibly great week. I’m happy for him. He’s worked hard and looked like the Nick that I know he wants to be, and that’s who we know he is.”
Jennings led the field in par 4 scoring and recorded his ninth top-five finish through 16 career tournaments, following up a top-10 finish at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational on Sept. 19.
“William has been through so much with the Walker Cup and all the things that have gone into his great play, like how he fought for his teammates today without maybe his best stuff, but he showed a lot of stuff for his teammates of how he battled,” Seawell said.
Freshman Bailey Sutter notched his first career top-10 finish in just his third career tournament after posting back-to-back below-par rounds on Monday. He earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors Wednesday as he continues his impressive beginning to life in Tuscaloosa.
The Crimson Tide will return to action in two weeks on Oct. 17 for the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational at the Fallen Oak Golf Course in Saucier, Mississippi.
