Netflix’s hit political drama The Diplomat is coming back to the small screen soon! The streaming service recently announced the series will return on October 15, almost one year to the day after Season 3 debuted (October 16, 2025).
Just in case you forgot, Season 3 ended with Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) wondering whether her husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) and President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) had just double-crossed her and possibly stolen the Poseidon missile.
The Diplomat creator Debora Cahn explained to Netflix Tudum, revealing, “Hal feels like he killed Rayburn. He’s gripped with this sense of horror at the chain of events that he kicked off. That said, Hal is a guy who moves forward. He lives like a goldfish.”
Cahn continued, “It has been really exciting seeing Hal step into this new role as vice president. The poor guy has been in Kate’s shadow for two full seasons and struggling, trying to be supportive…But we finally get to see him where he is most comfortable and has his feet on the ground. It’s exciting to see the dynamic that brought us to where the series begins, and Kate feels like Hal isn’t going to really be able to step back. Now we get to see why.”
When it comes to Season 3 Kate, Cahn says she is “a woman who thinks she isn’t ready for something even though she’s got the experience, competence, intelligence, and vision. But over time, she grows to understand that she can do this. She believes that she really can. And everybody who’s looking at her knows she can. Still, it gets pulled away.”
Now on to Season 4. Cahn doesn’t spill all the secrets, but did share with Netflix Tudum, “I’m so excited about Season 4. It’s going to be a lot of fun. We get to the end of a season and I always think, ‘Well. there’s no way that we can do this again.’ And then we dig back into it, and it’s like, ‘Oh my God, we have to keep going.’”
While Russell and Sewell will obviously return for Season 4, fans are wondering about the rest of the cast. According to Cahn, Janney and her on-screen husband, Bradley Whitford, are back: “Working with Allison and Brad, watching them together again, and the off-the-charts foursome that is them with Keri and Rufus…it’s an insane bag of candy.”
Janney’s role in Season 4 comes hot on the heels of her Emmy win for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Along with Janney’s win, The Diplomat was also nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Drama Series, and Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series. Russell was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, Whitford for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, and Sewell for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
