Converse is apologizing after photos from a recent ad campaign sparked racism accusations.
The footwear brand was attempting to promote the Chuck 70 X and Run Star Crush. The campaign featured Karina, a member of the K-pop girl group Aespa. She posed in a long, white skirt under a bright star-shaped light, holding a pair of black Converse.
The photos quickly spread, and many social media users called out the imagery as racist, comparing it to Ku Klux Klan hoods and lynching imagery.
The heavy outpour criticizing the shoes led the brand to release a statement.
“We’re sorry,” Converse told People. “We understand why this image is deeply upsetting and recognize that we got this wrong.”
“We removed it from our channels and are working to remove it everywhere it appeared,” the company continued. “This should not have happened and we will do better.”
The fashion brand also received backlash earlier this month for the Converse x Palmes collaboration with the Jack Purcell PDM sneaker. According to Women’s Wear Daily, the campaign included a photo of a model on a wooden ladder holding a pair of shoes that were hanging above him from a tree, with another model looking up as well. The photo was posted to the Converse Malaysia Instagram account.
Louisiana Congressman Troy Carter spoke out against the company for these campaigns.
“Nike and Converse, what the hell were you thinking?” he stated in a press release. “I am a Black man, a son of the South and a Member of Congress from Louisiana. Where I come from, the image of Black people hanging from trees is not ancient history.”
“Your campaign shows what looks like a hooded Klansman, framed by what appears to be the dangling feet of a lynching victim. There is nothing creative or artistic about it. It is racist, reckless and deeply offensive,” he wrote.
“This campaign should never have been created, approved or released. Nike and Converse must answer for it,” he ended the statement. “You have caused real harm, and repairing that harm will require more than an apology written by your public relations department.”
