Don Henley moved to Los Angeles in 1970 with two things: a box of songs he’d written and a hope that Linda Ronstadt would record them. He sent them to her manager John Boylan. What happened on the road was the part nobody planned or expected. Henley and Glenn Frey — who Ronstadt had also hired as her guitarist — were rooming together on tour. “They each discovered the other could sing and was a great songwriter,” Ronstadt told Billboard. Frey called Henley his “secret weapon.” By the end of the summer, they’d decided to start a band.
Ronstadt helped them. She introduced them to manager David Geffen. She helped them to recruit Randy Meisner from the Stone Canyon Band and Bernie Leadon from the Flying Burrito Brothers.
“She more than anyone else helped us put together the Eagles,” Frey said at Ronstadt’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2014. He wasn’t exaggerating. Ronstadt didn’t forget what they’d done for her either. When the Eagles recorded “Desperado,” she covered it for her 1973 album Don’t Cry Now. Her version helped bring the song to a new audience. Henley later called her interpretation “poignant and beautiful.” Two careers feeding each other. A drummer hired because a songwriter got turned down.

The Eagles sold over 200 million records. Hotel California alone sold more than 32 million copies. They won six Grammys and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Don Henley turned 79 this year. In February 2026, he said the Eagles’ current run of shows would “probably” be their last. “I think this year will probably be it,” he said. “And I’ve said things like that before, but I feel like we’re getting toward the end.”
