On Sunday, September 20, Garcia Swisher broke her silence on the show’s end, which Deadline first reported two days earlier, with a social media slideshow of behind-the-scenes photos from the series, set in the fictional town of Serenity, with Colbie Caillat and Sheryl Crow singing I’ll Be Here.
Garcia Swisher, 47, began her lengthy and eloquent caption by writing, “How do you say goodbye to something that became so much more than a job? Seven years. Five seasons. A million tiny moments that somehow became a whole life.”

“Sweet Magnolias came into my world during a chapter that held some of my deepest loss and, somehow, some of my greatest joy,” she continued. “I lost both of my parents during those early seasons, and in a time when I wasn’t always sure how to keep moving forward, Serenity gave me somewhere to go. These people gave me somewhere to belong.”
Garcia Swisher faced a trio of losses as she was getting Sweet Magnolias off the ground. Her dad, Jay Garcia, died in November 2019, followed by her grandma Helen in February 2021, and her mom, Loraine Garcia, just one month later. She wrote on Instagram in 2023, “I have struggled so deeply with the loss of my mother because my brother and I had watched her mind slip away for so long. We grieved ‘losing her’ for years and after our father passed, we knew the only place she wanted to be was with him.”
In her September 20 post about the show’s end, Garcia Swisher wrote that the cast and crew of Sweet Magnolias “made me laugh when I was sure I had forgotten how. They let me be sad when I needed to be. They showed up. Again and again and again. And maybe that’s what I will carry with me most.”

Why Did Netflix Cancel Sweet Magnolias?
Sweet Magnolias premiered on Netflix in 2020 and has generated 100 million views since. During its run, it appeared 14 times in Netflix’s Global Weekly Top 10, which tracks the streamer’s biggest hits across more than 60 countries, per Deadline.
After the fifth season premiered on June 11, it brought in 2.8 million views during its first week. But according to the outlet, that was 30 percent fewer viewers than the show’s season four premiere week, and after three weeks, season five dropped out of Netflix’s Top 10 most-watched shows.
