Junior Nationals qualifier Isabella Zhang has announced her verbal commitment* to the admissions process at Columbia University for the fall of 2027. She publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to the admissions process at Columbia University to pursue my academic and athletic careers! I am beyond grateful to my coaches, friends, and my family for their endless support and for believing in me. I also want to give a huge thank you to Coach Diana and Coach Demerae for this incredible opportunity. Go Lions!
A rising senior at Harvard Westlake High School in North Hollywood, California, Zhang has been a member of her school’s varsity swimming team since her freshman year. She also trains year-round with Los Angeles Swim Club, where she primarily specializes in breaststroke and IM.
Zhang is coming off a breakthrough 2025-26 season that saw her drop over five seconds in the 200 IM, roughly two and a half seconds in the 200 breast, and nearly a second and a half in the 100 breast. Early in the season, Zhang clocked her current personal bests in the 200 IM (2:03.59) at the CA CANY 17th Annual Cranberry Classic in November and in the 200 breast (2:16.88) at Speedo Sectionals – Walnut in March. She went on to the high school postseason in May, finishing third in the 100 breast with a current PB of 1:02.64 and seventh in the 200 IM (2:04.03) at the CIF Southern Section Division 1 Championships, before placing sixth in the 100 breast (1:02.92) and 22nd in the 200 IM (2:04.66) at the State meet.
Beyond the short course pool, Zhang boasts Summer Junior Nationals (LCM) qualifying times in the 100 and 200 breast.

100 Breaststroke: 1:02.64 200 Breaststroke: 2:16.88 200 IM: 2:03.59A Division I Mid-Major program, Columbia competes in the Ivy League, with the women’s team placing seventh out of eight teams at the 2026 conference meet. Zhang’s current lifetime bests in both breaststroke events would have qualified for the ‘B’ finals, while her current time in the 200 IM is just four one-hundredths shy of what it took to make the ‘C’ final; she’s slated to make an immediate impact with still two full seasons of training ahead before lining up at her first conference meet.
Zhang joins Mia Mracna, Carina Dai, Hannah Song, Sasha Volkova, and Tamara Kret in committing to the Lions’ class of 2031 so far.
Note: A verbal commitment between an Ivy League coach and a prospective student-athlete is not an offer of admission, as only the Admission Office has that authority. The coach can only commit his or her support in the admission process. Ivy League Admission Offices do not issue “Likely Letters” before October 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school. The Likely Letter, while issued after an initial read of the student’s application, is not an offer of admission to the university.
