Chad Gilbert had been battling cancer
Gilbert was diagnosed with pheochromocytoma, a rare adrenal cancer, several years before his death and had publicly documented his treatment.
In February, he experienced weakness in his left hand and leg before doctors discovered three new tumors in his brain. He shared in an Instagram update that he underwent brain surgery on February 27 and later revealed that he immediately regained function in his left hand.
His health battle didn’t keep him away from music for long. In June, Gilbert returned to the stage in Nashville in a wheelchair, describing the experience as particularly emotional because his daughter was there to watch him perform. “I got to play a show in front of my daughter, something I truly never thought I’d get to do again,” he wrote afterward.

Gilbert helped form New Found Glory in Coral Springs, Florida in 1997 and spent nearly three decades playing guitar and contributing to the band’s songwriting. The group became a major force in the early-2000s pop-punk scene.
Outside of the band, Gilbert also served as the vocalist for New Found Glory side project International Superheroes of Hardcore under the pseudonym Captain Straight Edge alongside Pundik (who went by Chugga Chugga) in 2006 and performed with the hardcore band Shai Hulud, rejoining the group for its 2013 album Reach Beyond the Sun.
