A group of Lincoln-Way High School students accused of making racist gestures toward attendees from a rival high school during a football game earlier this month will voluntarily withdraw from school instead of being expelled.
The Lincoln-Way School District Board of Education Thursday night voted unanimously to allow six students involved in the racial harassment incident during a Sept. 4 football game against Homewood-Flossmoor to voluntarily withdraw. The vote came as the students were facing possible expulsion.
“What happened at these sporting events should disturb all of us,” one parent said during the meeting. “When children experience or witness racism, the lesson we teach them through our response matters as much as what happened in the first place.”
The initial incident happened Sept. 4 at Homewood-Flossmoor High School during a varsity football game against Frankfort’s Lincoln-Way. Video captured students from Lincoln-Way East making monkey gestures and directing racial slurs towards students at the rival school, including the N-word.
A letter shared on social media after the incident from Lincoln-Way East High School’s principal and superintendent said the students were removed after they “made a very bad choice to engage in disrespectful and racist harassment towards HF students seated in the bleachers.”
“This behavior does not reflect the expectations and standards we have for Lincoln-Way students,” a separate statement from the district said. “The district is taking this matter seriously.”
A second allegation emerged that same weekend during a girls-cross country meet hosted by Lyons Township High School after the father of a Homewood-Flossmoor athlete said he heard the Lincoln-Way East coach make a remark about chasing or catching “monkeys” while giving the team a pep talk. He said some Lincoln-Way East athletes then allegedly made monkey noises and gestures near the predominantly Black Homewood-Flossmoor team.
At the time, Lincoln-Way disputed the characterization of the remark, calling it a misunderstanding.
In a statement, the district said coaches were recounting a “well-known story” about a section of the Lyons Township course known as “the jungle,” a name the district said appears on publicly available course maps.
The second incident is currently under investigation by the Illinois High School Association.
