Earlier today we looked at the percentage of each men’s power-four swim and dive teams that were international, and now we are looking at the women’s programs.
United States lawmakers introduced a bill that would limit the amount of international athletes on a roster to 20% on the heels of the Protect College Sports Act, but what would that actually mean for college swim and dive teams.
Leslie Lucas, owner of College Swimming Consulting and the mother of current University of Texas junior Cooper Lucas, analyzed current power-four rosters and shared the data with SwimSwam.
Lucas used the hometown/country listed on the roster page of each school’s website, which means there might be a few hiccups with athletes who were raised in the United States but represent other countries internationally, like the Rottink twins who are both freshmen this year and were raised in Tennessee but represent the Netherlands internationally.
In the data SwimSwam published yesterday, men’s and women’s swimming & diving both had less than 20% international freshmen on their rosters in 2022, but the team specific data is a little more compelling.
The women’s teams had a lower overall percentage of international athletes than the men’s teams. LSU has the most international athletes on the women’s side, coming in at 63% for this season (17/27). This is tied with the Florida men, who had the highest percentage on the men’s side.
There are only two other teams over 50% and both come in at 52%. Miami has 11 of 21 total athletes international and Florida State has 15 of 29 total athletes.
When looking at the proposed 20% threshold, 33 of 52 total teams come in over that mark including eight of the top 10 teams in 2026.
Boston College has the lowest percentage of international athletes, though they cut the funding for the program and there are no swimming and diving scholarships for BC athletes.
The next lowest Power Four schools were Iowa, Notre Dame, and Kentucky who all only have one international athlete on the roster.
