This Cubs team has its issues, without question, but I think it bears mentioning explicitly that the Braves team they just beat two out of three is a team that is going to win the NL East relatively easily. There’s no reason to believe these Cubs cannot compete with the other playoff teams in a postseason series. They may not ultimately win, of course, and it may very well be the case that their extreme bullpen issues are what sinks ’em. But compete? A chance to take a series? Of course they could do that against any other individual club. The only NL playoff lock or contender against whom the Cubs had a losing record this year is the Brewers. I do know and agree that they matter more. But still. They’re it. Don’t tell me the Cubs can’t compete against playoff teams. … buuuuut, seriously, the bullpen scares me. I still don’t know where the White Knight rides in from, and it increasingly looks like we’re just going to have to pray that the guys in-house all surprisingly and simultaneously lock it in for a few weeks. Speaking of outside entrants: Justin Steele’s would-have-been pitching appearance got rained out for the second straight day. He was going to make only one more appearance at Iowa either way (their season ends on Sunday), but it does push things back a little bit for the big league team. As I’ve said, the question is less about whether Steele could get big league outs right now (I suspect he could); the question is about how frequently he can pitch, for how long, and whether that can be incorporated into the big league team’s roster/needs/plans/schedule/etc. Plus also just wanting to make sure he’s in a good place for a full and normal offseason. After another huge game, Alex Bregman is just 0.3 WAR away from posting his biggest season since 2019. We all know the shape of the year was a relatively low low following by extreme heights in the second half, but, overall, it’s hard to be anything but thrilled by the first season of his five-year deal with the Cubs. This is what you hope happens when you sign a guy in this situation (especially when he’s already 32), knowing that his best years might be at the front half of the signing. I was really hoping we were going to see a double cycle last night, because that has never happened before. Alas.
