Australian Olympic medalist Elijah Winnington has found a new training group. He has joined World Record-holding sprinter Cam McEvoy at Somerville House after years training under Dean Boxall at the superpowered St. Peters Western program.
At Somerville House, Winnington will train with McEvoy under Tim Lane. Lane has overseen McEvoy’s transformation from a top 100 and 200 meter freestyler to the World Record holder in the 50 freestyle. McEvoy has used some non-traditional training methods in his latest evolution, using an ultra-low volume training approach of hyper-focused practices and building elite power in the gym.
But Winnington isn’t planning the same sprint shift as McEvoy. Instead, he says he will work with Lane and McEvoy (the latter viewed as a shared architect of his own training scheme) to develop a mid-distance freestyle training program.
“Tim (Lane), Cam (McEvoy), and I are developing something really cool in terms of training and preparing for mid distance freestyle events,” Winnington told SwimSwam. “At this point in my career I had to give it a go and try it out. I mean, they did change sprint swimming.”
Winnington wasn’t shy about his goals either – he said he’s chasing gold medals.
The 26-year-old Winnington won an individual silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and won back-to-back bronze medals as part of Australia’s 800 free relay in 2020 and 2024.
He was also the long course World Champion in the 400 free individually in 2022, which sits among five total long course World Championship medals and two short course World Championship medals.
Winnington’s results internationally have slipped since the Paris Games. At the 2025 World Championships, he was 10th in prelims of the 400 free and missed the final. At the 2026 Commonwealth Games, he won silver in the 400 free individually in a time of 3:45.56. That was better than his mark from Worlds, but was well shy of his 3:41.22 from the 2022 World Championships.
His best time since the Paris Olympics in the 400 is 3:44.17 from June’s Australian Swimming Trials.
Both clubs are located in Brisbane, just a few miles apart, so this won’t mean an actual move for Winnington. Winnington is expected to race under the Somerville House banner at the upcoming Australian Short Course National Championships. McEvoy is not currently entered.
