A 20-year-old man from Indiana is facing several charges after he was shot by a concealed carry license holder while he allegedly attempted to rob the man at a suburban gas station, authorities announced on Wednesday.
Christopher Brown, of Michigan City, Indiana, is facing felony charges of attempted armed robbery, possession of stolen motor vehicle, possession of a stolen firearm, and two counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon after the incident that unfolded on Monday.
The shooting occurred around 9 a.m. after a fully masked man, later identified as Brown, allegedly approached a man who was pumping gas at the Shell gas station near 151st Street and Harlem Avenue in Orland Park, pointed a gun at him and tried to rob him. Things took a turn when the customer, who police said is a concealed carry license holder, opened fire and shot Brown in the cheek, police said.
NBC Chicago got a chance to see the surveillance video from the incident, though the gas station owner would not grant permission to air the footage, citing the ongoing police investigation. The video shows a man filling up at pump No. 4 when the masked man approaches him, points what appears to be a gun at him and tries to rob him.
Brown then allegedly ran southwest from the scene, before ultimately stopping in the parking lot where he was found by responding officers.
Investigators later determined both the vehicle Brown drove to the gas station and the firearm he possessed were reported stolen from Michigan City, Indiana.
Brown was transported to a local hospital for treatment after the shooting, where he remains in stable condition and under the guard of police.
Police said the concealed carry license holder is cooperating with the investigation. No one else was injured.
