Nearly 20 yers after their last reunion and nearly a decade after the death of their frontman and leader Tom Petty, the surviving members of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are officially set to reunite for an upcoming show.
According to Variety, the four members of Petty’s iconic band will take part in a new show fronted by Chris Stapleton at the opening performance of the Americana Honors & Awards show in Nashville this Wednesday.
The performance will specifically see the involvement of original Heartbreakers Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch and Ron Blair.
For the finale of the show, the four Heartbreakers will be joined by two other later additions to the band: Steve Ferrone and Scott Thurston.
As exciting as it might be to see this concert in person, fans will have a chance to see a livestream of the show beginning 7:30 p.m. ET.
Notable ways to listen include NPR Music’s YouTube channel and the Americana Music Association‘s Facebook page; SiriusXM’s Outlaw Country channel and clear-channel WSM-AM; and Nashville’s FM stations WRLT and WMOT.
If that weren’t exciting enough, the band’s highly anticipated reunion comes a short time after the recent announcement that a new boxed set of the Heartbreakers’ earliest work together, Origins 1971-1978. The boxed set will also include previously unreleased material related to the Heartbreakers’ initial songs and musical projects.
Originally formed in Gainesville, Florida in the mid 1970s, the first lineup of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers lasted until 1982 when Blair formally left the group and was replaced by Howie Epstein, later returning in 2002 following Epstein’s death.
While Campbell and Tench remained with the group until Petty’s death in 2017, Lynch wound up exiting the band in 1994. The most recent concert performance featuring all five members of the original band played together was a short performance in 2002 upon their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
