CAIRO, EGYPT – 10 September 2026 – The British University in Egypt today opened the African Scientific Conference on University Sports “Cairo 2026” on its campus, one of several roles it is playing in the 12th All-Africa University Games.
Under the patronage of H.E. Professor Abdelaziz Konsowa, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Acting Minister of Culture, the conference was opened by President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohamed Loutfi MBE and H.E. Professor Ashraf Sobhy, President of the Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) and former Minister of Youth and Sports. The Games run to 16 September 2026.
The opening was attended by Mr Leonz Eder, President of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), along with university leaders, academics, and representatives of university sports bodies from across Africa.
The conference features 130 research papers on the future of university sport, covering the healthy campus, governance, disability, anti-doping, sports marketing, artificial intelligence and e-sports, talent identification, and sport for peace and sustainable development.
Professor Loutfi said that hosting the conference reflects The British University in Egypt’s view that a university’s role extends beyond its campus, and that sport and scientific research can combine to build stronger institutions that serve their communities. He said the University hosts the headquarters of the Federation of Africa University Sports and is FISU’s exclusive academic partner across Africa and the Arab region, a role that links research with practice and with the strategic planning of university sport.
H.E. Professor Ashraf Sobhy said that university sport is one of the main channels bringing together young people across Africa, and that holding the conference alongside “Cairo 2026” supports the exchange of knowledge and cooperation among African university students.
The conference is one of several roles the University is playing during the Games. As host of the FASU headquarters, it is accommodating university presidents, senior leaders, and delegations from across Africa on its campus, and providing facilities and organisational support for the event.
Two weeks earlier, The British University in Egypt campus hosted the torch relay ceremony for the 12th All-Africa University Games, which brought together university sports leaders and students ahead of the competitions. During the Games, the institution is also holding a workshop on the development of university sport and the African University Vice-Presidents’ Forum, under the title “University Sport as a Catalyst for Institutional Excellence and African Development”.
The University said its involvement in “Cairo 2026” extends beyond hosting events to supporting the delegations and institutions taking part, and reflects its position as a centre for academic and sporting cooperation between Egypt and countries across Africa.
