As a follow-up to the news we reported last month regarding 2020 Olympic silver medalist Tomoru Honda‘s driving violation, the 24-year-old has received a one-year prison sentence, but suspended for three years.
We reported in August that butterfly specialist Honda was removed from the Japanese rosters for both the Pan Pacific Championships and the Asian Games for violating the Act on Punishment of Offenses Relating to Driving, a condition that typically involves dangerous driving causing injury. At the time of our original report, the Japanese Swimming Federation (JASF) stated, “We would like to inform you that Mr. Tomoru Honda, a member of the Japanese national swimming team of our federation, was indicted on charges of dangerous driving causing injury after causing a traffic accident while driving his private vehicle, and that this matter was reported to our federation a considerable time after the incident and the indictment.”
The prosecution alleged that the defendant, Honda, accelerated his car because he didn’t want to be left behind when a sports car in front of him sped up while he was commuting.
They criticized his actions as “dangerous and reckless, and malicious,” as he failed to negotiate a curve at the accident site and collided with another car. (Yahoo)
In response to the verdict, the Japanese Swimming Federation (JASF) stated, ‘First and foremost, I would like to express my deepest sympathies and apologies once again to the victim who was injured in the accident caused by Mr. Honda. I also sincerely apologize to the victim’s family, everyone who supports the swimming world, and all those involved for the great concern and inconvenience caused.
‘As a public interest corporation that oversees swimming in Japan and is expected to earn the trust of society through sports, we take the fact that a guilty verdict has been handed down to one of our registered athletes very seriously.
‘Furthermore, we take very seriously the considerable time that passed between the occurrence of the accident and the indictment and the reporting to our federation. Our federation will thoroughly review and examine the contents of this judgment, proceed with deliberations by the Ethics Committee and other necessary procedures, and take strict and appropriate action against Mr. Honda in accordance with our federation’s regulations.
‘Furthermore, we take this matter seriously as it affects the entire swimming community, and we will reiterate to all stakeholders, including athletes and coaches, the importance of legal compliance, awareness of traffic safety, and social responsibility. We will also further strengthen compliance education, including prompt reporting and consultation in the event of serious incidents.
‘As a federation, we will do everything in our power to prevent such incidents from happening again and to restore trust.
‘Please note that we will refrain from disclosing any information that concerns the privacy of the victims. We appreciate your understanding.’
