Junior Nationals qualifier Philip Johnson has announced his verbal commitment to stay in-state and swim at North Carolina State University beginning in the fall of 2027. He publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I chose NC State because of the people and the coaches who create such an amazing environment. From the moment I visited, I felt like I belonged and was already part of a family. I knew it was the right place for me, both in and out of the pool.
A senior at East Gaston High School in Mount Holly, Johnson has been a member of his school’s varsity swimming team since his freshman year. He also trains year-round with the Gaston Gators, where he primarily specializes in breaststroke and the 50 freestyle.
Johnson is coming off a breakthrough 2025-26 season that saw him drop over eight seconds in the 200 breast, nearly three seconds in the 100 breast, and just over a second in the 50 free. He set his current breaststroke personal bests at the North Carolina Senior Championships in February, where he placed fifth in the 50 free (20.94), sixth in the 100 breast (56.32), and ninth in the 200 breast (2:02.99). He set his 50 free PB of 20.81 at the NC BRSL Championships a month later.
On the high school scene, Johnson won the 100 breast (58.08) and 200 IM (1:56.91) at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 4A State Championships in February, after touching ninth in the 50 free in 1A/2A as a sophomore.
Beyond the short course pool, Johnson is coming off a successful summer LCM season, qualifying for the Summer Junior National Championships, where he placed 26th in the 50 breast (29.00,=PB) and 30th in the 100 breast (1:03.90, PB).
Top SCY Times: 100 Breaststroke: 56.32 200 Breaststroke: 2:02.99 50 Freestyle: 20.81A Division I program, NC State competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference, with the men’s team placing third out of 15 teams in 2026. Johnson’s current times would put him outside the scoring cutoffs for a second swim at the meet, which require 52.95/1:56.17 in the 100/200 breast and 19.46 in the 50 free, though he still has two full seasons of training to go before lining up at his first conference meet.
Johnson joins Thomas McMillan and Seth Morgan in committing to the Wolfpack’s class of 2031 so far.
