In fact, Collider recently included the 2-minute-and-46-second guitar-riff-heavy tune on the publication’s list of the “Best Songs of the 1960s.” The publication put “Good Times Bad Times” at the ranking’s ninth spot, arguing that it’s actually a quintessential Led Zeppelin song, despite being less popular than “Stairway to Heaven” (1971) or “Kashmir” (1975).
Other ’60s songs featured on Collider‘s ranking include “All Along the Watchtower” by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, “In My Life” by The Beatles, and “Waterloo Sunset” by The Kinks, with “Be My Baby” by The Ronettes coming in at the number one spot.
Jimmy Page Has Raved About the Late John Bonham’s Drumming on the 1969 Track
In a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, guitarist Jimmy Page revealed that “Good Times Bad Times” was a collaborative effort between the band, which consisted of John Paul Jones, John Bonham, who died at the age of 32 in 1980, and Robert Plant.
“‘Good Times Bad Times’ — John Paul Jones came up with the riff. I had the chorus. John Bonham applied the bass-drum pattern. That one really shaped our writing process. It was like, ‘Wow, everybody’s erupting at once,'” said Page to the publication.
Page also complimented Bonham’s drumming in “Good Times Bad Times” while speaking to Rolling Stone. According to Page, Bonham “pushed himself to be able to deliver that bass-drum roll in ‘Good Times Bad Times.'”
“I haven’t met anybody who can play that all the way through, with that swing and approach,” said Page to the publication.
Page made similar comments about Bonham’s drumming abilities on “Good Times Bad Times” during a 2019 interview with UnCut, per Ultimate Classic Rock.
“John changed drumming overnight. Track one of the first album, ‘Good Times Bad Times’, was a revelation. No one could play it. No one,” said Page.
Page also said that he and Bonham “developed this extraordinary intuition” during their time as bandmates.
“We were renowned for being able to stretch songs live, and that came from John following my guitar and just improvising and bending with where I was going,” said the 82-year-old. “‘Dazed and Confused’ is a classic example. He could read my mind and go anywhere and do anything without it falling apart. ‘Communication Breakdown’, ‘Dazed and Confused’, ‘Good Times, Bad Times’, ‘Ramble On’, ‘Immigrant Song’, ‘Kashmir’… These are moments of genius.”
While speaking to UnCut, Page also explained why Led Zeppelin stopped being a band after Bonham died.
“There were probably half a dozen drummers who thought they’d wait a while and then give us a call and take his place, but … he was a one-off,” said Page during the 2019 interview.
