“America the Beautiful” was just one of the emotional songs performed throughout the two-hour concert, which also featured an opening performance of “My City in Ruins” by Bruce Springsteen, plus a powerful rendition of “God Bless America” from Celine Dion, among several other performances.
The event ended up raising over $150 million for the United Way’s September 11 Fund, and prompted two more tribute concerts the following month: the “Concert For New York City” in Madison Square Garden, and the Michael Jackson-led “United We Stand.”
