Kodak Black has scored a victory in one of his legal battles: The Florida rapper is no longer facing a felony charge for allegedly fleeing law enforcement during a traffic stop.
On Tuesday (Sept. 8), a judge in Broward County, Fla. dismissed the felony case brought against Kodak (Bill Kapri) in May. Prosecutors had alleged that the rapper drove off after being stopped by an officer in Pompano Beach this past February.

Kodak’s attorney, Bradford Cohen, argued that police bodycam footage established zero basis for this charge. According to court papers, Kodak merely drove away at a normal speed after it appeared his “consensual encounter” with the officer at a stoplight had concluded.
“The deputy never told the defendant he was conducting a traffic stop,” wrote Cohen in an August motion to dismiss the charge. “He never told the defendant he was detained or that he was not free to leave.”
Prosecutors did not oppose this motion, leading Judge George Odom Jr. to easily dismiss Kodak’s case. “Accepting these undisputed facts as true and drawing all reasonable inferences in the light most favorable to the state, the court finds that the facts do not establish a prima facie case for each essential element of the charged offense,” wrote the judge in Tuesday’s order, obtained by Billboard.
Cohen did not immediately return a request for comment on Thursday (Sept. 10).
Kodak has dealt with numerous legal troubles over the course of his successful rap career, which has included the 2018 chart-topping album Dying to Live. He’s faced charges for robbery, sexual assault and weapons possession, some of which have led to stints in prison.
The Florida native remains tied up in the criminal justice system, even after Tuesday’s court victory. In May, just weeks before his Broward County arrest, Kodak was separately charged with drug trafficking in Orange County, Fla.
Kodak is accused in that case of trafficking MDMA, the drug popularly known as molly or ecstasy. Cohen is representing him in that case too and has argued that the charge is meritless. “We look forward to yet another fruitful resolution to another case that should have never been filed,” Bradford told Billboard in May.
