He later revealed the distraction wasn’t just a form of teenage rebellion; he had undiagnosed ADHD that made traditional schoolwork a struggle.
Back in Massachusetts, Perry formed a band with bassist Tom Hamilton that would soon add singer Steven Tyler to the lineup. By 1973, Aerosmith’s single “Dream On” had climbed to No. 1 in Boston, launching a career that would eventually land Perry at No. 48 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. Funny enough, Perry plays right-handed despite being naturally left-handed, a quirk of the instructional record he first learned from.
These days, Perry isn’t slowing down even without Aerosmith on the road. Speaking to Billboard from his home in Florida, he’s been touring with a stacked new lineup of the Joe Perry Project, and this summer he hit the road across Europe with Hollywood Vampires, the supergroup he shares with Johnny Depp and Alice Cooper.
