ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Bills open their regular season Sunday against a familiar foe that’s had their number in recent years.
Buffalo will travel to Houston to face the Texans, a team the Bills are 1-4 against since 2018. The Bills have lost every game played in Houston during that stretch.
“They got us I think every single time we went down there, even before I got here. So it’d be good to go down there and get one,” offensive tackle Spencer Brown said.
The matchup has been particularly tough for quarterback Josh Allen. Against Houston’s defense, Allen has completed just 33 of his last 64 pass attempts and was sacked eight times in last year’s game.
“You know, they’ve had some really good defenses in the past, and it’s no different now,” Allen said.
Tight end Dawson Knox knows the challenge ahead. “It might be my least favorite thing to see is Josh on the ground, especially when you’re blocking the guy that tackled him,” Knox said.
The Texans fielded the NFL’s top defense last season. Wide receiver Khalil Shakir expects more of the same Sunday.
“Every single play, a guy’s going to be there trying to make the tackle like that,” Shakir said.
But Brown isn’t reading too much into one game. “Oh, I’m sure if we lose, the season’s over. The Bills are a bust. And I’m sure if we win, we’re going to the Super Bowl. And our Super Bowl odds go up to +5000. So I’m sure everybody’s really excited to see how week one goes. And you know, talk about it for the rest of the week until the next week comes around,” Brown said.
For Allen, Sunday is simply the start of a new season. “I get to live my dream each and every day. Be a quarterback in the NFL, and that’s something to smile about,” Allen said.
