Eric Chen of Hong Kong has announced his commitment to continue his academic and athletic career at the University of Pennsylvania beginning in the fall of 2027.
“I’m so excited and honored to announce my commitment to the application process for the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania! I want to thank my coaches and teammates at Hong Kong Island Stingrays Swim Club, especially Coach David, Coach Frankie and Coach Luke for mentoring me along the journey. I am so grateful to my family, HKIS, teachers and friends for their unwavering love and support. A heartfelt thanks to Coach Mike, Coach Andrew and Coach Emma for believing in me and for the incredible opportunity to continue my academic and athletic careers at UPenn. Go Quakers!”
Chen swims for the Hong Kong Island Stingrays during the school year and also competes in the United States for Irvine Novaquatics. At the start of August, he swam at Summer Juniors in Irvine, CA. There he was highlighted by a 4th place finish in the 1500 free as he swam to a lifetime best 15:38.31. He also finaled in the 400 free, touching in a lifetime best 3:57.99. He also was 20th in the 400 IM in a 4:27.47.
Chen’s Best LCM Times (With SCY Conversions) Are:
1500/1650 free: 15:38.31 (15:19.91) 800/1000 free: 8:12.42 (9:11.73) 400/500 free: 3:57.99 (4:26.65)The UPenn men finished 8th out of eight teams at the 2026 Ivy League Championships with 677.5 points, finishing just behind Dartmouth who scored 694 points.
Based on his best converted times, Chen already has the potential to make an impact at the conference level as his 1650 free time would have been 14th. UPenn’s highest finisher in the event was Aaron Jia who swam a 15:26.79 for 15th while teammate Robert Melsom was just behind him in a 15:28.24 for 16th.
Chen will arrive as a member of the class of 2031 along with Ben Liang, Lysander Mihaly, Alex Koo, Julian Willoughby, and Alex Daile.
