Franco Colapinto was left to rue a painful mistake at Monza after a promising start to his Italian Grand Prix was derailed by an early spin, robbing the Alpine driver of the chance to convert one of his strongest performances of the season into an even bigger points haul.
The Argentine had enjoyed a remarkable opening phase at the Temple of Speed, climbing as high as fourth as the race was repeatedly reshaped by incidents involving some of Formula 1's biggest names.
After the second restart, he even briefly moved into third with a bold pass on Max Verstappen, although the Red Bull driver immediately reclaimed the position.
Colapinto remained in the fight at the sharp end before losing control of his Alpine through the Lesmo corner. The resulting trip through the gravel dropped him to 16th and effectively ended his hopes of capitalising on an afternoon when Alpine had unexpectedly emerged as a serious threat in the midfield.
He recovered impressively to finish ninth, but the points could do little to soften the blow of what might have been.
"I had a great opportunity and I didn't take it, so I'm sad, really sad about that,” he told ESPN Argentina, holding back his tears.
“I think it could have been a great race, and that was a big mistake. I missed a very important opportunity for the team and for myself, so I'm a bit sad about that. Learning from this is difficult.”
A promising race slips away
The frustration was particularly intense because Colapinto had done so much right before his costly error.
Starting seventh, he gained ground amid the opening-lap chaos and was running as high as fourth before the race was interrupted.
The second start gave him another opportunity to attack, and he immediately went after Verstappen, passing the Red Bull into the first chicane before being repassed moments later.
It was a glimpse of the kind of fight Colapinto had dreamed of having with the sport's leading teams, but his afternoon unravelled soon afterwards.
"I'm just frustrated. I think I did some good stuff," Colapinto said. "I don't know, I just lost the car completely in Turn 5-6, a bit out of nowhere, it's very frustrating.
“I think we could have done some good things, P2 and P3 together, and you feel so strong and suddenly fighting with the top teams, you get very motivated very quickly, and a mistake like that, it throws all away, and I'm just frustrated.

"I don't really understand yet what happened. I lost the car very aggressively, I went very fast through the gravel, I had a lot of damage.
“I thought I was going to have to retire, and then we started to go again, we changed the car a bit with the tools, we closed everything up a little bit and made the car slightly more draggy again, and yeah, managed to score points."
For all the disappointment, the recovery itself demonstrated the young Argentine’s considerable resilience. He had been convinced that his race could be over after the off, yet Alpine managed to nurse the damaged car back into competitive condition and bring it home inside the points.
But knowing that he had squandered a rare opportunity to fight closer to the front made the result difficult to celebrate.
A rare chance that hurts to lose
Colapinto's frustration was heightened by Alpine's overall performance at Monza. Team-mate Pierre Gasly had started from pole and ultimately finished seventh, underlining just how competitive the team's car had been across the weekend.
For Colapinto, that raised the painful question of what might have been achieved had he kept the car on the road.
"Just frustrated with not maximising the car and the good stuff that we were doing together, and yeah, I think just learn for the future," he said.
"But we don't get many of these opportunities fighting up there and at the front, and it's extra frustrating to have moments like this. I think we should have scored more points, so, sorry to the team, and hopefully we can do better in Madrid."
The brief battle with Verstappen was perhaps the clearest indication of what made the mistake so difficult for Colapinto to accept.
Yet even that moment was put into perspective by what followed.
"I think when you're in the car you don't really feel the difference if it's one or another, but it was cool to be fighting with them," he said.
"That's what I meant [before], and to be fighting side-by-side with the top cars and the top teams, we cannot really do it. And so to just miss an opportunity like this, it's very painful."
The ninth-place finish ultimately salvaged something from Colapinto's afternoon, but Monza will nevertheless linger as a painful missed opportunity.
There was no guarantee of a podium – and Colapinto's position after the second restart did not put one within his immediate grasp – but Alpine had given him a car capable of fighting much closer to the front than usual.
