With only a little over a month left before the 2026 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, those interested in participating in one of the world’s largest races without being a registered runner can sign up for one of the many volunteer opportunities across the race weekend.
Anyone interested in volunteering can sign up as an individual, as a group, in a key role or in a medical role. There are opportunities across weekend pre-race events and the day of the race, set for Oct. 11.
To be a volunteer, some general requirements include being at least 14 years old and adhering to public health guidelines and event protocols. For volunteer groups with minors, a chaperone of 21 years of age or older is required.
In the case of medical volunteers, those interested must be 16 years of age or older to participate.
Here are a few ways to volunteer at this year’s events.
Abbott Chicago 5K
The 3.1-mile course on Oct. 10 is an opportunity for registered runners and non-participating individuals to take part in additional marathon events during race weekend. The deadline to apply is 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2.
Volunteers for the 5K can also receive volunteer reward points. These can be redeemed for merchandise items, from Nike running shoes to a Chicago Distance Series notebook.

2026 Chicago Marathon
This year, it is expected that more than 55,000 runners will participate in the marathon. Volunteers for the day help out throughout the course of the race, at the start and end areas and at aid stations. Like the Abbott Chicago 5K, prospective volunteers must apply by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2.
