There isn’t a generation alive that doesn’t appreciate and love at least one of Robin Williams‘ works. But of all of his films for kids and families, in my humble opinion, Hook is truly the best. For those who don’t remember, the story follows workaholic Peter Banning (Williams), who constantly disappoints his family by prioritizing his job. Banning ends up visiting his wife’s grandmother, Granny Wendy (Dame Maggie Smith), who also helped him get adopted, returning to the house they grew up in in merry old England.
While at a benefit for Wendy, Banning’s children are kidnapped from their beds, and Wendy finally reveals that Banning is the real Peter Pan, and his children were taken by Captain James Hook (Dustin Hoffman). He’s in complete denial until the pixie Tinkerbell (Julia Roberts) whisks him away to Neverland to help him remember who he is and take back his kids.

What Critics Thought of ‘Hook’ Versus Fans
From top to bottom, the Steven Spielberg classic is a masterpiece in fantasy film. It transcends age—while my child self marveled at the epic pirate sword-fighting scenes and Tinkerbell magic, my adult self sobs at the themes of being a present parent and believing in yourself.
Critics in 1991 did not share my sentiment, though. Film critic Roger Ebert called it “a lugubrious retread of a once-magical idea,” adding that its ending “would be embarrassingly excessive even for a movie in which something of substance had gone before. Here we get the uncanny suspicion that ‘Hook’ was written and directed according to the famous recipe of the country preacher who told the folks what he was going to tell them, told them, and then told them what he had told them.”
That harsh criticism, however, is not shared by the masses. On movie-rating site Rotten Tomatoes, the film scored an impressive 76% Audience Score.
“This will always be a favorite, top-tier movie for me. It’s just so beautifully done; and hits all the right emotional notes. Peter’s journey of self-discovery, remembering who he was and who he needs to be is so powerful. Masterful work by Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, Bob Hoskins, Julia Roberts, Steven Spielberg, and everyone else involved with the movie. Hook gets me every time; maybe even more so as I get older. Robin Williams is Peter Pan. Bangerang,” wrote one enthusiastic fan of the film.
“I can’t believe this movie has such a low rating! It was a masterpiece in its time and still is today,” another claimed.

Many credit Williams’ brilliant performance for “saving” the film, and frankly, they probably aren’t wrong—Williams is at his peak in this piece, blending his emotional prowess with his childlike demeanor. Personally, it will forever be one of my all-time favorites and clearly many agree.
