The Mariners announced that infielder/outfielder Connor Joe and right-hander Nolan Kingham have each cleared waivers and been sent outright to Triple-A Tacoma. Joe has the right to elect free agency though the M’s didn’t indicate whether or not he would do so. Both players had been designated for assignment on Tuesday when the M’s added Lázaro Montes and Hoby Milner to the 40-man as active rosters expanded from 26 to 28.
Joe, 34, was signed to a minor league deal in the offseason. He was selected to the big league roster in April. While on the 40-man, he was frequently optioned to Triple-A and recalled as needed. He appeared in 21 big league games and made 45 plate appearances. The M’s presumably signed Joe because he is a righty bat who has better numbers against lefties in his career. But in a tiny sample of 26 trips to the plate against southpaws this year, he slashed .136/.269/.318.
As mentioned, Joe was mostly kept in a depth role and then was bumped off the roster. The 29 other clubs passed on the chance to pick him up from the wire. Since Joe has at least three years of big league service time, he has the right to elect free agency.
However, since he has less than five years of service, exercising that right would mean walking away from his remaining salary commitments. According to the MLBTR Payroll Tracker, his deal pays him a salary of $1.5MM in the majors and $270K in the minors. He might decide to report to Tacoma to keep collecting that minor league pay for the next few weeks. He would become a free agent at the end of the season if not added back to the roster.
As for Kingham, the Rangers selected his contract at the start of August, which was his first time on a 40-man roster. He made one appearance for them, allowing one run in one inning, before being designated for assignment. The Mariners claimed him off waivers and kept him at Triple-A Tacoma, so he still has just the one big league appearance on his résumé. Since this is his first career outright and he has less than three years of service time, he has to accept the assignment.
That will give the Mariners a bit of extra non-roster depth. In 61 Triple-A innings this year, he has a 6.34 earned run average. His 22.6% strikeout rate, 9.3% walk rate and 39.9% ground ball rate are all roughly average figures. The high ERA is perhaps a product of the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, as well as a high .333 batting average on balls in play and 63% strand rate.
