Ferrari may still have plenty of work to do if it is to overhaul Mercedes in the 2026 Formula 1 championship, but Charles Leclerc believes the battle is far from decided.
With 87 points separating the Scuderia from the Silver Arrows in the Constructors’ standings, the Monegasque driver sees one factor above all others capable of turning the title fight on its head: development.
Leclerc is refusing to spend too much time worrying about Ferrari’s current deficit, instead placing his faith in the enormous influence that upgrades can have under the latest generation of regulations.
With the cars carrying significantly less downforce than their predecessors, even seemingly modest aerodynamic gains can produce a disproportionate effect on performance.
That makes the remainder of the campaign something of a high-speed development lottery, with the balance of power potentially shifting dramatically whenever a team finds a particularly effective solution.
Upgrades will determine the order
While Leclerc remains realistic about Ferrari’s chances, he is certainly not prepared to abandon his championship dream – particularly when that dream involves finally delivering the ultimate prize to the team he has represented for so long.
“It’s not something I really want to put energy towards thinking about too much. This championship will be won with upgrades. The upgrades are so powerful with these cars,” the Ferrari driver said, speaking on the latest Beyond the Grid podcast.
“We've got a lot less downforce than we used to in the past, so every point of downforce you add to this car has got a much bigger influence on how the car feels like on track. So the pecking order can change so quickly one way or another.
“I'm very much focused race by race and not really thinking about the long-term picture about if we've got a real shot with that championship. But surely until it's not finished, I'll keep believing in it and we'll see how it goes.
“The championship is something that I will dream of ticking off one day, particularly with the red team, this has been a dream of mine since many years. I feel we are getting closer.
“When will that be? I don’t know, I hope as early as it can be.”

Leclerc currently sits fifth in the Drivers’ Championship, 28 points behind Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton.
His own season endured a frustrating opening phase, although changes made during the Silverstone weekend appeared to unlock a more convincing feeling from his car – and ultimately helped propel him to victory.
Since then, Leclerc has concentrated on keeping his approach uncomplicated. Rather than chasing a particular sensation from the car or becoming trapped by memories of how it behaved earlier in the season, he wants to react instinctively and extract whatever performance the latest version of the Ferrari offers.
Finding the flow
“The car is constantly changing so it's not like I can really go back to that feeling I had in Melbourne, so it's evolving but my goal is to get into the car and not overthink,” he explained.
“When you overthink, you know that you are losing time on the table because our sport is not a lot about reacting on what's happening on the car. It's more about anticipating and feeling the car.

“Getting into a corner, I need to know exactly the way the car will behave so I don't have to overthink about things.
“I think overthinking is killing performance. When things come naturally, that's where I think the flow state that we speak about, racing drivers or athletes as well, the flow state when things just flow naturally is really where you use 100 per cent of your potential.
“When you've got to overthink things, that’s where it becomes trickier.”
With Ferrari still within striking distance of Mercedes and a development race capable of reshuffling the order in an instant, Leclerc's message is clear: there is little value in predicting the championship now. The real verdict will come from the upgrades – and how quickly Ferrari can make them count.
