Ultra Swim Swimmer of the Month is a recurring SwimSwam feature shedding light on a U.S.-based swimmer who has proven themselves over the past month. As with any item of recognition, Swimmer of the Month is a subjective exercise meant to highlight one athlete whose work holds noteworthy context – perhaps a swimmer who was visibly outperforming other swimmers over the month, or one whose accomplishments slipped through the cracks among other high-profile swims. If your favorite athlete wasn’t selected, feel free to respectfully recognize them in our comment section.

No one shone more for the U.S. team at the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships than Kate Douglass, who, though she only won one individual gold medal, delivered some of the best performance of all-time over the course of the meet.

Prior to Pan Pacs, however, Douglass kicked off the month of August in style at the U.S. National Championships, clocking 51.93 in the 100 free during a time trial on August 1 to rank #4 all-time and put her just five one-hundredths shy of training partner Anna Moesch‘s newly minted American Record of 51.88.

Two weeks later, Douglass took on a massive program at Pan Pacs, racing four individual events and three relays.

She had a strong start to the meet, winning silver in the women’s 50 fly (25.06) behind teammate Gretchen Walsh after becoming just the third woman in history under the 25-second barrier in the prelims (24.99).

At the end of Day 1, Douglass threw down one of the fastest 100 freestyle splits in history, 51.01, as she anchored the Americans to gold and a new world record in the mixed 4×100 medley relay in a time of 3:36.70.

After missing the podium with a 4th-place finish in the 100 breast on Day 2, Douglass bounced back on Day 3, leading off the U.S. women’s 4×100 free relay in a time of 51.69 to miss the world record in the women’s 100 free by just one one-hundredth of a second (51.68, set by Marrit Steenbergen in June). Douglass did take down the American Record of 51.88, set by Moesch at Nationals, and now ranks #2 all-time in the event.

That set Douglass up for a historic final day, as she tackled a daunting program with prelim heats in the 50 free, 200 breast, and then finals in both events plus the timed final of the women’s medley relay in the evening.

She got the day off to a blazing-fast start, putting up a new world record in the prelims of the 50 free in a time of 23.49, breaking Gretchen Walsh‘s mark of 23.55 from June.

Then, during the evening session, Douglass produced one of the greatest swims of all-time in the 50 free final, clocking 23.19 to knock a massive three-tenths off her newly minted record en route to winning the gold medal.

The performance put her 36 one-hundredths ahead of he next-fastest performer in history, Walsh, which is equivalent to 1.53%—making  it one of the most dominant world records ever.

About 20 minutes later, Douglass was back in the water of the women’s 200 breast, claiming silver in a time of 2:22.57.

Racing for the third time in 90 minutes, Douglass closed out a busy program by anchoring the U.S. women to gold in the 4×100 medley relay, splitting 52.23 as they won by over four and a half seconds and set a new Championship Record (3:50.43).

On Tuesday, Douglass was named to the 2026-27 U.S. National Team in six different events, putting her incredible level of versatility on display.
