Normally, the arrival of the MLB offseason is a moment that gets me pretty pumped. We all like mystery boxes, and the offseason is one of the best ever. All the things that the Chicago Cubs *MIGHT* do to improve their team. It’s exciting, and I love tracking it throughout the winter months.
This year, however, there are a couple things that put a huge dent in the excitment.
First, the offseason has arrived because the Milwaukee Brewers have won the World Series. They earned it, and they get their compliments, and blah blah whatever. I don’t dispute that. But I sure as heck don’t have to enjoy it, or the victory laps that will follow.
Second, this particular offseason is going to get blown up in the middle by the lockout. When the CBA expires on December 1, almost everything we love about the offseason will shut down for an undetermined length of time. If the owners plant their feet and insist on a salary cap – which, by all accounts, they will do for a very long time – then nothing much will change until there’s extreme pressure on one side or the other. Most believe that won’t happen until future TV dollars are impacted, and that doesn’t come until the end of May.
Seven months from now.
So, yeah, the concept of “the offseason” doesn’t so much tickle me today as it might have in other years.
That said, there is nevertheless work to be done by the Cubs, and that work can start as soon as today. Officially, free agency has arrived, though teams cannot sign new players for five days, and there are also options decisions to make in the interim. The Cubs have an extraordinarily large volume of free agents this year, and I expect there will be at least a few immediate conversations about new deals, just to see if something can get done before wide open negotiations kick in next week.
There is also the lockout, itself, that may spur hurried activity. History suggests the Cubs may not go nuts quickly, but the last time this happened, other teams certainly did. Maybe the Cubs will have learned that they need to be more aggressive to secure their preferred pitching?
