ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A Yellow Alert is posted Wednesday for the risk of a couple rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms. The first timeframe we’re monitoring is during the morning hours. A weakening cluster of storms is forecast to enter western New York around sunrise, then continue toward Rochester and the Finger Lakes just after the morning commute. There’s a chance this first batch of storms could produce a stronger storm with some gusty winds, along with a brief period of heavier rain. We’ll see a lull in the activity into the mid afternoon hours.
The heat and humidity will build, which will aid in fueling our next batch of storms. This next round looks to arrive between 6PM – 11PM. This second round looks like a higher risk of producing some severe storms as it moves through. Expect heavy rain, hail, and gust winds in any strong to severe storm. There’s the slight chance of an isolated tornado or two, especially during the evening hours. This second batch of storms will push south by first thing Thursday morning, and much quieter weather will follow.
Thursday will see any morning showers ending, with some sun returning into the afternoon. Speaking of sun, our Labor Day weekend is looking pretty good this far out. Right now we expect dry weather, with temperatures that are a little cool but very comfortable for outdoor activities.
