Catherine Breed has hit the halfway mark in her effort to swim the entire coast of California, a 900-mile stretch from Oregon to Mexico, while promoting ocean conservation.
In a report from Monterey County Now, Breed was about 20 miles from the halfway mark. Breed was reported to be a week ahead of schedule, having spent some longer days in the water than initially planned.
“It feels amazing that we made it… I have swam Monterey Bay.” Breed said in the report from Monterey County Now. “At the 400-mile mark, we had a big raft of sea lions come and hung out with me, It was dolphins at 200.”

Breed, who has been swimming about four miles offshore, noted that she and her team are now prepping for what she called the final “really big challenge.”
“The shark thing is concerning especially as we’re in the red triangle, and approaching October, but we are so far offshore, I am tucked in between two big boats.” Breed said. “We will be on our way to the final really, really big challenge, which is going to be the Big Sur coast… We’re just moving really fast down the coast, I am proud of how we’re having fun. Every day I am a little bit scared…There are days when I am terrified and I do it anyway. Being scared, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try.”
In a more recent report from Monterey County Now, Breed touched on her well-being, noting that the challenge has its fair share of ups and downs.
“The answer is both.” Breed responded when asked whether she was tired or happy in the Monterey County Now report. “There are some days where it’s amazing, like oil-slick flat water. Today I had a friend with me, and I was happy the whole time… There are days where the motivation is not there. The fear is there, the waves are there, they can be up to 7 feet, and it’s like swimming in a washing machine… When you are going after nay goal in life you are not always going to be confident about it or motivated to do it. It’s dedication and consistency matters more.
