Authorities with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are searching for a suburban Chicago man who was last seen inside the park at a visitor’s center in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
According to park officials, Marcin Bachleda-Blaszczak, who is from Illinois, was reported missing to Great Smoky Mountain National Park dispatch center Aug. 24. Based on an initial investigation, his last known whereabouts were the Sugarlands Visitor Center parking lot inside the park on Aug. 22, officials said.
Following his disappearance, rangers set up an expanded perimeter search around the area. According to an update posted to social media Saturday, a team of 47 park rangers and volunteers were still actively searching in areas around the park.
North Carolina Emergency Management also posted that it had deployed four of the state’s Mountain Rescue Teams to assist with the search.
According to an online fundraiser, Bachleda-Blaszczak is from suburban Lockport. He is 5 feet, 6 inches tall, approximately 170 pounds, and has brown hair and blue eyes.
As of of Sunday, Bachleda-Blaszczak remained missing, the park said.
