It could take months for an Elgin high School student to walk again, and the search is on for the hit-and-run driver who injured her.
Jazmyn Trejo remains hospitalized after a hit and run crash left her with severe injuries.
On the evening of October 2, Jazmyn was on riding her bike home from a football game at school. Her mom said she just a few minutes from home and was riding parallel to the cross walk near Summit Street and North Shady Oaks Drive in Elgin, when she was hit by a driver.
Her mother said the driver stayed at the scene but did not get out of the car. She said Jazmyn called her to tell her what happened. She also said Jazmyn tried to crawl to the side of the road when she was hit by second car.
The second driver did not stay at the scene.
“They totally altered her plan to go college and have a sports scholarship,” said her mom, Miranda Williams. “She may not ever be able to run again. May not be able to play contact sports again. Her ribs were fractured, her collar bone, clavicle all fractured. The vertebra in spine also fractured. It just blows my mind that someone can do that and not have a conscience. At this point, it has been a month. I don’t know how a person could do that and continue to live like nothing ever happened. They just left her there.”
Williams told NBC-5 that no one from the Elgin Police Department has interviewed her daughter about the incident.
We reached out to the Elgin Police Department for a response as well as an update on the search for the driver– but no one responded to our emails.
An online fundraiser was launched to help Jazmyn and her family. Her little sister, who is 5 months old, is having open heart surgery on Monday.
“To the person who did it, I would just like to say do the right thing,” Williams said. “You completely changed a young person’s life. You altered their future and their dreams.
