PENFIELD, N.Y. — The Penfield Patriots football team is coming off its best season in program history after winning its first ever Section V championship last year.
The Patriots won just two games in both 2023 and 2024, but last season they captured their first sectional brick. Now the team is looking to build on that success despite graduating many players from last year’s title run.
“Yeah. So last year was a great year, but we’re moving on. We’ve been working real hard this offseason,” senior lineman Jack Bidleman said.
Penfield will rely heavily on underclassmen this season. The team has several sophomores and even a freshman who will be starting at wide receiver and possibly on the line.
“All the young kids we have, you know, we have a lot of sophomores who want to get better and who love football,” lineman Nathan Masters said.
Despite being the defending champions, the Patriots may enter the season as underdogs, similar to last year when they started 1-4 before rallying to win the title.
“Nothing comes easy. You got to work for it. And you always believe in yourself because a lot of people didn’t. But we did. And we kept going. And we produced a great season last year,” Bidleman said.
“What made us great and what led to our sectional championships was we stuck together and we bonded and we moved forward,” Masters said.
Head coach Anthony Bianchi credits the team’s togetherness for creating a winning culture at Penfield.
“They all just stick together and work hard. We have a bunch of sophomores are going to be starting for us this year. Even even a freshman will be starting at wide receiver, maybe even a line. But the thing is, they they keep working hard each day. They keep pushing each other, and they want to get better,” Bianchi said.
The Patriots will feature an experienced offensive line and a run-first offense this season. The team’s culture has shifted from being underdogs to defending champions.
“I think the positivity among the school, the administration, the players, know, last year, winning a title was great for the school. But we want to keep that going. We want to keep getting better. And we hopefully we start strong and we keep going as the season goes on,” Bianchi said.
The Patriots begin the season on the road at Victor on Thursday.
