The facade of a popular restuarant in north suburban Hubbard Woods came crumbling down Thursday, leaving part of Green Bay road closed and a giant concrete slab smashed on the sidewalk.
The incident occurred Thursday afternoon outside Winnetka vegan hotspot Spirit Elephant, located at 924 Green Bay Road. According to the village a portion of Green Bay Road was closed Thursday due to the damage.
“Part of the building facade fell earlier today outside Spirit Elephant,” the village said in a Facebook post. “Fortunately no one was injured.”
went on to say that portions of the facade were being removed to make sure the area is safe.
A post from the restuarant at 6:52 p.m. said a limestone block on the face of the restaurant fell.
“We are removing the entire front to be extra safe,” the restaurant said, with hopes of reopening Friday evening.
Photos captured at the scene and sent to NBC Chicago by witnessed showed parts of the building at the front of the restaurant torn off, with large pieces of limestone and concrete in pieces on the sidewalk. Cones were set up on the Green Bay Road directly in front of the restaurant.
A closer view shared by the Village of Winnetka showed the extent of the damage, with a shattered window and the front of the building partially torn off.
An investigation into the cause was underway, the Village said.
