For nearly 40 years, a path between two houses in north suburban Deer Park has given residents access to a nearby park and helped them avoid busy streets.
But earlier this month, the longtime shortcut was suddenly shut down.
The path connecting residents to Charlie Brown Park was never public and has actually sat on private property for nearly 40 years.
Licensing with the village, the homeowners “were not paid any money, they voluntarily allowed the path to remain and be used by pedestrians only.”
That all changed when one homeowner decided to end the agreement and turn the path private.
“I was devastated when I first got that email,” neighbor Michelle Brandt said. “I cried because that’s like when my outlets is going out to the park.”
The homeowners on one side of the walkway said they’re neutral about the issue. The other homeowner didn’t come to the door when NBC Chicago reporter Michelle Baik knocked.
The village said its concerns include the use of e-bikes, use during late hours, littering and disrespectful interactions.
“We also don’t want to feel punished and feel like our property values are taking a huge hit,” Brandt said.
Other neighbors say, without direct access, walking to the park would be dangerous. It would also take much longer.
“The best solution that we could come up with right now is either eminent domain, which is the hard way, or potentially putting a gate here with the fob key for only our residents to be able to access,” said Stefani, another resident.
Whatever path it decides to take, the village says it’s a high priority.
