Casey Mize‘s start on Saturday was cut short after 2 2/3 innings due to a right ankle sprain. The injury occurred when Mize slipped on the steps when entering the dugout after the second inning, and his attempt to gut it out in the third resulted in two outs and a Ryan Jeffers double before Mize was pulled from the game. X-rays were negative on Mize’s ankle and he told the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Jeff Sanders and other reporters today that further imaging didn’t reveal any structural damage.
Mize is considered day to day for now, and the Padres have some flexibility in potentially skipping his next start since the team has an off-day on Thursday. Sanders writes that Mize’s situation won’t change the Padres’ plans for Joe Musgrove‘s activation from the injured list, as Musgrove is slated to throw one more minor league rehab outing before potentially returning to San Diego’s rotation. Mize has a 7.00 ERA over 18 innings since he was dealt from the Tigers at the trade deadline, with two duds and two quality starts in his brief tenure as a Padre.

The Giants‘ 5-4 loss to the Red Sox saw both Willy Adames and Victor Bericoto leave the game due to injuries. Adames hurt his left elbow on an awkward slide into home in the first inning and was replaced in the field before the bottom of the fifth. For the final out of that frame, Bericoto hurt his right knee chasing after a ball in foul territory that was ruled an out due to fan interference, and Drew Gilbert pinch-hit for Bericoto in the first at-bat of the sixth inning. Both players will undergo MRIs on Monday to determine the severity of the injuries. Since San Francisco is well out of the race, it is possible Adames or Bericoto might be shut down for the season if their injuries lead to IL stints and recovery timelines much longer than a couple of weeks. Speaking of Giants players being shut down, the team announced that Joel Peguero‘s season is officially over. Peguero began the season on the 15-day IL due to a left hamstring strain, then posted a 2.38 ERA over 11 1/3 relief innings before another left hamstring strain sent him to the 60-day IL on June 1. He made two Triple-A rehab appearances this month but didn’t record a single out over five batters faced. The right-hander has a strong 2.41 ERA over 33 2/3 career innings in the majors, but with a 4.99 SIERA that better reflects his shaky peripherals. The Rockies placed third baseman Kyle Karros on the seven-day concussion IL prior to today’s 7-2 loss to the Guardians. Infielder Ryan Ritter was called up from Triple-A in the corresponding move, plus Tyler Freeman was activated from the 10-day IL and then optioned to Triple-A. Karros was only just activated from the concussion IL on Friday, but he is now sidelined again after feeling symptoms during Saturday’s game, which prompted his removal from the field. A collision with teammate Ezequiel Tovar on August 11 was the root cause of Karros’ concussion symptoms, and it would seem likely that he’ll miss more than a week just to ensure that he’s finally past any lingering issues. Now in his second MLB season, Karros has hit a solid .263/.360/.419 with 10 homers over 403 plate appearances, which translates to a 104 wRC+. Freeman had been out since August 9 due to lumbar pain, and the utilityman will now head to the minors possibly just under rosters expand on September 1.Hence then, the article about nl west notes mize musgrove adames bericoto peguero karros was published today ( ) and is available on MLBtraderumors ( Middle East ) The editorial team at PressBee has edited and verified it, and it may have been modified, fully republished, or quoted.
