John Cena Reveals What Sparked His Rap Career
“Chrome belt, look like John Cena in here,” Drake raps. The track was originally premiered in Drizzy’s FOMO short film in September and landed on streaming services with the HABIBTI (FOMO) deluxe earlier in October.
Cena joined The Morning Show on Thursday (Oct. 8), where he reacted to hearing the Drake lyric. As someone who’s tried his hand at the rap game, albeit two decades ago, Cena said he was “super grateful.”
“I gave my shot at the hip-hop game, and I’m grateful for the time I spent in it,” he reflected. “I also know the practice that it takes to understand language to put forth thought-provoking lyrics, to actually put it to music that people understand and can bob along with.”
Cena continued: “[Drake’s] a performer that’s been in the space for such a long time. To have somebody like that use me as a piece of language in their profession, it’s like, you never know who you’re gonna reach. And I’m super grateful for Drake. I’ll bring it back. I have had so many good times in Canada, and I go there often, because that’s where my family is. Man, I gotta say, I love Canada.”
Drake previously mentioned John Cena on For All the Dogs Scary Hours Edition‘s “Wick Man.” “I’m almost expressionless/ John Cena wouldn’t know emotions I wrestle with,” Drizzy raps over The Alchemist production.
During the early days of his WWE career, Cena was heavily inspired by hip-hop and he released a rap album fittingly titled You Can’t See Me in 2005. The platinum-certified album featured his “My Time Is Now” theme song and peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard 200.
Cena’s ties to hip-hop run deep. He even took inspiration for his signature “you can’t see me” hand gesture from G-Unit’s Tony Yayo, who used the dance while starring in 50 Cent’s “So Seductive” music video.
