The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art held a reception for its show “GLEAN: Selections from the Permanent Collection” on Thursday.
The first show of the academic year, “GLEAN” featured exhibits from 29 artists, including former University faculty members Alvin Sella and Angelo Granata. The gallery’s Exhibitions Coordinator Vicki Rial said the gallery selected the pieces from the University’s permanent collection.
“We have a substantial permanent collection here at the University, and we try to show pieces from it at least once a year,” Rial said. “This show is a really good opportunity for students to see the quality of artwork that’s in the collection at the University. Many of these artists are familiar names in the art world, people that have been at the Whitney or at the Met.”
Rose Kimbrough, a junior studying in New College, came to the reception for “GLEAN.” She said she tries to attend every opening the gallery hosts.
“It’s good for building community and seeing what’s going on,” Kimbrough said. “This show is unique because it’s only work from the collection, so it’s good to see what kind of work the University has.”
Artists featured in the show included Ansel Adams, John Pfahl, Sally Mann, Robert Stackhouse and Chryssa, a Greek-American artist who worked with a variety of media.
“We started selecting for the show with the nineteen pieces by Chryssa, which are on wonderful heavy paper and are a nod to a sculpture she did in Times Square back in the ‘60s,” Rial said. “These works are very powerful, and they really hold a wall. She was one of the first women to do this kind of work.”
Max Hudson, a junior studying studio art, works for the Sella-Granata Art Gallery on campus and usually can’t attend events at the Sarah Moody gallery. He said he was glad he was able to see “GLEAN,” and the pieces by Chryssa spoke to him the most.
“They remind me of the place where logos and symbols come from,” Hudson said. “They sort of combine ancient runes and modern company logos, just through visual abstraction.”
The exhibits that make up “GLEAN” are currently on display at the gallery. Students are free to visit from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during weekdays until its closing on Sept. 18. Rial said the gallery is already planning its next event.
“There is a show that opens on Oct. 14 by the artist Laylah Ali,” Rial said. “She does very unique drawings and paintings and is very committed to her style and subject. She’ll be coming to give a lecture following the reception on the 15th.”
