As some Indiana communities near the two-week mark without electricity, Gov. Mike Braun is blasting the utility company’s efforts to address the problem.
In a social media post Sunday, Braun said NIPSCO has “ample resources” to restore power, but as more than 20,000 residents remain in the dark nearly two weeks after a derecho devastated the northwestern part of the state, the governor is seemingly running out of patience.
“NIPSCO has ample resources to get the job done in northwest Indiana, but they continue to fail Hoosiers,” he said. “NIPSCO is a monopoly with a responsibility to ratepayers. Residents are forced to rely on them for safety and comfort and they must get the power back on NOW.”
According to the latest updates from NIPSCO Sunday, more than 350,000 customers have had their power restored after a series of severe thunderstorms hammered the region. Those storms included an August 11 derecho that knocked out power to more than 60% of the company’s customers, according to estimates.
As of 11 a.m., more than 21,000 customers are still without power, and it may be until at least Monday night until customers in Munster have their power restored. Estimates now say it may take until at least 11:59 p.m. Tuesday for a majority of customers in Gary and Portage to get power back, two weeks after the derecho that impacted those regions with winds of up to 110 miles per hour.
Though NIPSCO has called the storms “historic,” Braun said he is running out of patience.
“I have mobilized the Indiana National Guard and sent teams from Indiana State Police, Department of Natural Resources and Department of Correction to literally clear the way for NIPSCO utility crews,” he said. “There is no excuse for these delays.”
NIPSCO is urging customers not to approach crews in the field as they work to make repairs, and to avoid downed power lines, which could still be active.
