For the second consecutive year, LSU and Clemson are facing off to begin the season. This year’s game, though, has a different feel.
LSU has both a new head coach and quarterback. Lane Kiffin and Sam Leavitt lead the Tigers after the departures of Brian Kelly and Garrett Nussmeier. Dabo Swinney is still the Clemson head coach, but Christopher Vizzina is now QB1 with Cade Klubnik now in the NFL.

Recently, the crew of CBS Sports’ Inside College Football made their picks for the game. Rick Neuheisel, Aaron Taylor and Brian Jones are all going with No. 11 LSU to get the home win over unranked Clemson.
“I said that LSU is the overhyped team to start our show. I’m going to give LSU the chance to win this game in front of the home crowd, though.
“… Christopher Vizina, the supposed quarterback at Clemson. We’ll wait and see. I just don’t think he’s going to like Death Valley LSU style in an opener.”
Aaron Taylor, who also picked LSU, noted that Clemson has been trending the wrong direction in recent years and sees some big question marks on the roster.
“The real story here is the trend of the Clemson Tigers for the last three or four years. That program’s been trending down. I think LSU is going the other way,” Taylor said.
“Now, to Dabo Swinney’s credit, he did go to the portal. He has changed some things. He’s adjusting to the times. You just wonder if it’s a little too little, a little too late, especially that early in the season with big questions at the quarterback and the offensive line.”
Brian Jones made it a clean sweep for LSU, picking the Bayou Bengals.
“Yeah, I’m going to take LSU at home in this one. This is an early game,” Jones said. “It’s going to take a while for all those new pieces, I believe, at Clemson to start to congeal, especially the quarterback position.
“Blake Baker did an outstanding job turning around the fortunes of that LSU Tigers defense a season ago. I think that continues, and they’ll be the better team that first weekend of the season.”
