He sliced nine tenths of a second off his previous best of 1:57.07, which he swam in the semi-finals at the European Junior Championships last month, and knocked six tenths of a second off Ilia Borodin‘s Russian record.
Yumeki Kojima owned the previous world junior record at 1:56.53, which he clocked at the Japanese Championships this March. The fastest junior swim in history is Michael Phelps‘ 1:55.94 from the USA Championships in 2003, 11 years before World Aquatics started recognizing world junior records.

He was three tenths ahead of Kojima’s pace on the fly leg and nearly half a second ahead on breaststroke, which gave him a buffer over the Japanese swimmer’s 27.65 final 50.
This is Shcherbakov’s only individual event of the meet, and he wins a senior medal at the first attempt. He won the World Junior Championships last summer in 1:57.25, and now holds that title, the world junior title, the European junior record, and the world junior record in this event.
He has already won a silver medal this week as part of the prelims team for the men’s 4×100 medley relay, which he led off in 49.14. He was part of the team at the European Junior Championships that set a new world junior record of 3:12.75, splitting 47.60 on the anchor leg.
He moves up to 23rd all-time in the 200 IM, and now ranks 8th all-time on the European rankings.
