Hubert Kos used a phenomenal opening 100 meters to hack a second off Laszlo Cseh‘s supersuited Hungarian record in the 200 IM, clocking a 1:54.24 to set a huge new lifetime best.

He went out under world record pace, touching in 23.82 at the 50 and a staggering 51.62 at the halfway point, splitting 27.80 on the backstroke leg. He was 0.88 seconds under Leon Marchand‘s world record pace – yes, that world record – after 100 meters.

The field came back to him on the breaststroke leg as he split 33.98, turning in 1:25.30 with Marchand’s record now ahead of him, and Kos was then pressed hard by Spain’s Hugo Gonzalez on the freestyle leg.

The Hungarian swimmer held on, splitting 28.94 as he avoided falling victim to the same tactics that had seen him the last two European titles. He ran down Alberto Razzetti in 2022 and Ron Polonsky in 2024 on the final 50.

He came in 1.10 seconds faster than his bronze medal-winning swim from the World Championships last summer, and 0.94 seconds faster than Cseh’s swim from the 2009 World Championships.

He opted for the 200 IM over the 100 back at this meet, scratching the latter event yesterday morning. Leon Marchand‘s absence due to an adductor injury opened up the gold medal in this event, and Kos took full advantage here.

Split Comparison

Previous Hungarian Record (Laszlo Cseh), 2009 – 1:55.18 New Hungarian Record (Hubert Kos), 2026 – 1:54.24 Hubert Kos Previous PB, 2025 – 1:55.34 World Record (Leon Marchand), 2025 – 1:52.69 50 24.72 23.82 24.21 24.10 100 53.78 (29.06) 51.62 (27.80) 52.89 (28.68) 52.50 (28.40) 150 1:27.40 (33.62) 1:25.30 (33.98) 1:26.91 (34.02) 1:24.63 (32.13) 200 1:55.18 (27.78) 1:54.24 (28.94) 1:55.34 (28.43) 1:52.69 (28.06)

Kos was out more than a second faster than his previous best, and two seconds under Cseh’s record pace. He was similar to both on the breaststroke leg, actually slightly faster this year than he was last year, but the pace clearly caught up with him on the freestyle leg.

Cseh’s record had stood for 17 years, with Kos coming close last summer with his 1:55.34 in the final at the World Championships. This marks Kos’s third European title in a row in the 200 IM, which was the event he initially broke out in as a junior with a 1:56.99 World Junior Record at the 2020(1) European Championships.

Kos now moves up to rank 4th all-time, behind only Leon Marchand, Ryan Lochte, and Michael Phelps. Four of the five fastest men in history have been coached by Bob Bowman, who adds another feather to his cap as one of the greatest IM coaches in history.

Kos wins his second title of the meet, having also placed 4th in the 100 fly and 6th in the 200 fly. He has lowered Hungarian records in both the 200 back and 200 IM this week, shattering his lifetime best in both events.

Gonzalez swam a huge Spanish record for silver, clocking 1:54.44 to hack nearly two seconds off his previous best of 1:56.31. He was also out fast in 53.41, but had the second half in the field at 1:01.03.

Kos now ranks first in the world this season, two tenths of a second ahead of Gonzalez.
