Leon Marchand, who is widely regarded as the best male swimmer on the planet today, is coming off a somewhat modified European Championships, meaning he was not able to race his signature 200 and 400 IM. However, he still made major waves each time he dove into the pool. Now the focus begins to shift to the end of the calendar year and the World Short Course Championships in Beijing.
After a pair of individual golds in Paris at the European Championships, which included a career best of 3:43.14 in the 400 free, and a 1:51.72 in the 200 fly, as well as an historic 1:43.76 leadoff leg of France’s 4×200 free relay and a 49.64 fly leg on the 4×100 medley relay, Marchand now looks to December’s Short Course World Championships, which would be his first ever Short Course World Championship outing.
In an interview with Franceinfo, Marchand said that this meet will be a goal for him this year, especially since he has yet to participate in a major short-course championship.
“It’s a goal for me this year… I’ve never done any major short course competitions, and it’s in December.” Marchand said. “Timing-wise, I just think it’s going to be a bit tricky between my vacation and preparing for Beijing, but it’s something I really want to achieve.”
We have seen what Marchand is capable of in both long-course meters swimming and short-course yards. Still, if the phenomenal Frenchman were to suit up for a major championship in short-course meters, and considering his underwater and above-water racing ability, it could be an historic outing in the making.
This is not to say we have never seen Marchand race in SCM, as he is the world record holder in the 200 IM in 1:48.88 from the World Cup in Singapore in November of 2024.
The bulk of his SCM lifetime bests have come at various stops of the World Cup over the last few years, and with what we have seen him do at world championships and Olympics in the past, if the lights are bright, so is Marchand.
Marchand’s SCM Personal Bests:
100 IM- 49.92 200 IM 1:48.88 (WR) 400 IM- 3:58.30 200 Free- 1:40.91 400 Free- 3:38.25 200 Breast- 2:02.00 200 Fly: 1:58.49Marchand’s 2026 campaign was heavily impacted by a lingering injury to his adductor hip muscle that caused him to pull out of the French National Championships partway through the meet and later kept him out of both IMs and breaststroke events at the European Championships.
With hopefully plenty of time to recover from this injury, and some time away from the pool on vacation, if Marchand decides to go through with short course worlds, he will surely be one of the meet’s headlining performers.
