That left Hungarian Hubert Kos with a clean runway to capture the gold, with the Bob Bowman-trained Olympic champion firing off a time of 1:54.24 to not only grab the top spot but also establish a new Championships Record and Hungarian national record in the process.
But Kos wasn’t without challengers in tonight’s event, with Spaniard Hugo Gonzalez unleashing the fastest time of his career to fall just .20 shy of gold.
27-year-old former Cal Bear Gonzalez stopped the clock at 1:54.44 for a monster new Spanish national record and a silver medal-worthy performance.
In the semi-finals of this event, Gonzalez punched a result of 1:56.61 to claim the top seed and nab a new Spanish national record.
Last night’s performance came within .30 of the 1:56.31 PB and ESP national record he established during the 2021 Mare Nostrum Tour.
With tonight’s outing, however, Gonzalez hacked nearly two seconds off that time to establish a new national record and become the 6th-swiftest men’s 200m IM performer in history.
