For the first time in 10 years, a San Diego County team will compete for the biggest prize in Little League baseball.
The Bonita-based Sweetwater Valley all-stars secured their spot in the Little League World Series on Friday night after an 11-3 win in the West regional final over the Kawaihau Community Little League from Kapaa, Hawaii.
The league said on Saturday morning that the team was already traveling to South Williamsport, Penn., where they will begin playing in the 20-team, double-elimination tournament on Aug. 20. against Midwest Region champions Northwest Little League from Davenport, Iowa.
Sweetwater Valley opened the game with a 5-0 run and closed it with the game’s final six runs, highlighted by Isaac Ramirez’s two-out grand slam in a six-run fifth inning flurry. He also singled and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth.
The Southern California champions scored twice in the third inning when Teagen Cochran singled in Julian Sevilla, who led off with a walk, and Mateo Ruiz, who singled.
Sweetwater Valley added three runs in the fourth.
Grant Mielke singled with one out, moved to second on Ramirez’s single and scored on Templeton Tran’s single. Ramirez and Tran each advanced a base on a passed ball. Ramirez scored and Tran went to third on a wild pitch two pitched later.
Tran scored one out later on a wild pitch.
Waika Doctolero homered for the Hawaii state champions in the top of the fifth, cutting the deficit to 5-3 in the scheduled six-inning game.
Noah Kirk was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs and seven hits in five innings with seven strike outs and one walk.
Leo Gonzales held Kawaihau Community hitless in the sixth, striking out Kholten Panui on a full count to end the game.
Both teams had seven hits.
The game at Al Houghton Stadium was a rematch of Sweetwater Valley’s 6- 0 victory Tuesday that advanced it to the championship game.
Sweetwater Valley is 15-0 in its four tournaments, outscoring its opponents 114-15.
A Hawaiian team had won the West Region six of the past seven times it was held. The event was not held in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Sweetwater Valley is the 13th team from San Diego County to reach the Series, and the first since the Chula Vista-based Park View Little League squad won the West in 2016.
Two San Diego-area teams have won the tournament: Northern Little League out of El Cajon — which featured future San Diego State and pro football quarterback Brian Sipe –in 1961 and Park View in 2009.
