Michigan middle school fundraiser goes viral for hilariously direct approach ...Middle East

A Michigan middle school fundraiser is going viral for its hilariously direct approach after a student’s father shared a picture of a form his daughter brought home from school on social media.

Dan Reese, whose daughter attends Saline Middle School in Saline, Michigan — just south of Ann Arbor — shared a photo of a fundraiser form for the school’s parent-teacher organization on X on Wednesday.

“My daughter’s middle school has the most direct fundraising strategy and I’m here for it. We can skip the whole charade,” Dan Reese said in the post that went viral in a handful of hours.

A description at the top of the form says “this fundraiser is in lieu of sending students home with the task of selling door-to-door, collecting money, and delivering goods. Please help us avoid that by supporting the Saline Middle School PTO with your donation, and helping us achieve our goals to support our students and faculty.”

Below the description are donation amounts between $10 to $100, followed by a blank option — each with a description that gets at what many parents find most irritating about traditional school fundraisers.

“___ $10 I do not want to bake, so here is the money I would have spent on those cupcakes. ___ $25 I do not want to hit up friends, family, co-workers, so here is the money I would have spent buying wrapping paper. ___ $50 I do not want to walk, swim, or run in any activity that has the word ‘thon’ in it. Here is the money I would have spent on my child’s ‘free’ t-shirt.___ $75 I don’t want to attend fancy balls or galas, so here is the money I would have spent on a new outfit.___ $100 I really wouldn’t have helped away, so here is $100 to forget my name.$ ____ I am making this donation to express my appreciation for having nothing to buy, sell, or do except fill out this form,” the fundraiser form said.

Once it started gaining traction online, Reese followed up by saying “If everyone viewing this post sent the Saline Middle School PTO $1 I’d be the best fundraiser of all time,” in the replies to his original post.

Many X users praised the fundraising effort, and some said they were considering donating after seeing the post. Others were critical of the fundraiser, stating that going door-to-door is a good skill development opportunity and builds character among kids.

Saline Middle School PTO shared its own post about the fundraiser on social media on Tuesday, though the content differed greatly from what was sent home with students.

“Our Fall Fundraiser is a simple way to provide extra support for our teachers and students throughout the year. If you’re able, please consider making a contribution. Every donation—big or small—is appreciated and helps us show our teachers just how much we value all they do,” the PTO said in the post that also asked parents to keep an eye out for blue envelopes for the fundraiser heading home with their kids.
