This month on “The Changemakers” join for a discussion with Nandini Kanthi, founder of Sensible, about the research, engineering and future of Sensible — a “smart sticker” able to interface with existing women’s health products and provide potentially valuable information and insight into reproductive health.
“It’s essentially a smart sticker you can attach onto a period pad,” said Kanthi. “The smart sticker collects and analyzes menstrual blood in real time … menstrual blood is something that, every month, we wear our pads, menstrual cups, tampons, whatever we use, and we kind of don’t think about it much more than that, you know? It’s ‘get your period, get through the symptoms,’ and you throw away your products as you go, if you use the disposable ones. … Menstrual blood has 385 proteins unique to menstrual blood … for centuries, women have gone not knowing 385 pieces of information about their bodies.”
Those unique proteins can potentially provide information helpful to treat, diagnose and predict related health concerns, according to Kanthi.
“That can mean like a secret to understanding endometriosis, PMOS, which we struggle to diagnose,” said Kanthi. “It takes seven to ten years in the status quo for people to get diagnosed because we aren’t able to understand or capture the right signals. So, our hypothesis is that menstrual blood is the key to all of that. We start with endometriosis, PMOS monitoring, identifying early risk factors, and actually fill in the informational gaps and remove the unpredictability that so many women have normalized for themselves when it comes to their period.”
