Szafnauer: Root cause of Aston Martin ‘mess’ plated five years ago ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

Former Aston Martin team principal Otmar Szafnauer has delivered a stinging verdict on Team Silverstone's struggles, suggesting the roots of the F1 outfit's current crisis were planted years ago and accusing the team of trying to buy success before it had built the foundations to sustain it.

The former team principal, who guided the squad through its Force India and Racing Point years before departing in early 2022, did not hold back when discussing the Lawrence Stroll era on the High Performance Racing podcast alongside broadcaster Jake Humphrey and former Ferrari engineer Rob Smedley.

Aston Martin has poured vast resources into its Formula 1 project: a state-of-the-art factory, a new wind tunnel, a forthcoming Honda power-unit partnership and headline-grabbing signings such as Adrian Newey.

Yet despite those investments, the team has endured a miserable 2026 campaign and currently languishes near the bottom of the constructors’ championship.

Asked when the current problems began, Szafnauer’s answer was blunt.

Otmar Szafnauer with Aston Martin F1 team manager Andy Stevenson.

“I think Lawrence has owned the team for eight years now. You've got to go back five years,” he said.

“For me, the mess comes from wanting success too quickly in Formula 1. And wanting success too quickly and not being patient means you get personnel turnover too quickly.

“And the most successful teams are the stable ones.”

A direct hit at the Stroll project

Szafnauer argued that constant changes in key personnel have prevented Aston Martin from building the stable structure needed to compete at the front.

“That's what Toto [Wolff] and Mercedes have now - stability of personnel. That's what Red Bull had when they were winning, and Ferrari was the same under Ross [Brawn],” he added.

For Szafnauer, the problem is not a lack of money, facilities or ambition. His argument is that Aston Martin has tried to accelerate a process that Formula 1 rarely allows to be rushed.

And in a sport where continuity has underpinned the success of Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari, his suggestions that Aston Martin’s troubles stem from impatience may be the most damaging criticism of all.
